Charcoal vs. Gas Grills: The Pros and Cons

It’s the age-old question that every grilling enthusiast has faced at some point: should I buy a gas grill or a charcoal grill?

There’s a lot to consider when it comes to buying a new BBQ. How much space you have for a grill, how often you’ll be grilling, the setup and maintenance required, and what your budget is. You should also consider how you like your food to taste when grilled, the type of food you like to grill, the amount of grilling time needed, and the time it takes to get to the perfect grilling temp.

To help you decide which grill type is right for you, Tariq Halal has created a list of the pros and cons of both charcoal and gas grills.

Pros of Charcoal Grills:

They tend to be less expensive than gas grills.

They reach a higher temperature which sears your meat nicely.

     The flavor is much smokier.

Depending on the size, they are easier to move or travel with.

You don’t need to worry about gas safety.

Cons of Charcoal Grills:

They take longer to heat up.

They take more fuel in the long run.

They require more setup and cleaning.

Pros of Gas Grills

Gas grilled meats have fewer carcinogens than meats heated by charcoal.

Gas grills have a smaller carbon footprint.

A propane gas cylinder will last much longer than a bag of charcoal.

They are quicker to heat up and clean.

They have better temperature control so you can easily cook a wide range of foods including meats, fruits, and vegetables.

Cons of Gas Grills

They take more time to set up and maintain.

     They aren’t as mobile.

Gas grills require more mindfulness when it comes to safety, especially with the propane tank.

They are more expensive than charcoal grills.
